Job description

CADagency is delighted to be working with a design and engineering company based in Southampton. The company designs rigging, pullies and custom parts mainly for the marine sector. They work closely with naval architects, clients and project managers to create technical drawings and 3D models of parts and assemblies.

Due to continued company growth, they are looking to recruit an additional Mechanical Design Engineer to play a pivotal role in product development and enhancement. For this role, you will be collaborating closely with the Head of Design to bring innovative solutions to market. Your responsibilities will span the entire project lifecycle, from conceptualisation to final drafting, with a focus on engineering calculations and the application of SolidWorks FE analysis.

The role is based in our clients Totton office, as you will lead and guide junior designers to ensure the production of high-quality design for various projects.

The key responsibilities will include

Project Management

  • Collaborate with the Head of Design to develop new products and expand the size range of existing products.
  • Lead existing and new projects, overseeing the entire project lifecycle, from concept to final drafting.

Engineering Ownership

  • Take full ownership of engineering and calculations for projects, employing both hand calculations and SolidWorks FE analysis.
  • Ensure adherence to quality standards and industry regulations in all engineering processes.

Collaboration and Reporting

  • Work closely with junior designers to achieve high-quality final designs and production drawings.
  • Provide regular project updates and reports to the Head of Design.

For this role, you will need to have existing conceptual and engineering skills with a keen understanding of load paths on systems. You will need to be proficient in SolidWorks for modelling and drafting. You will also need a strong knowledge of material properties, with experience in composite design being advantageous. Due to the nature of the role, you will need excellent attention to detail to ensure accuracy in design and drafting.

Note: Experience in composite design is desirable but not mandatory. The ability to work independently and collaboratively, coupled with strong analytical and CAD skills, is crucial for success in this role.
